Play Description: In 1895, Oscar Wilde brought a libel suit against a man who had publicly maligned him. Within a year, Wilde found himself on trial for acts of “gross indecency” and—implicitly—for a vision of art that outraged Victorian propriety. In this stunning work of theater, Moises Kaufman turns the three trials of Oscar Wilde into a riveting drama that weaves together courtroom transcripts, Wilde’s writings, and the words of his contemporaries. GROSS INDECENCY unveils the full range of Oscar Wilde’s genius and frailty while laying bare the hypocrisy and repression of his society.
Roles available:
An ensemble of nine actors will play multiple roles and also act as narrators at various times. Larger roles to be assigned include:
LORD ALFRED DOUGLAS, a young man in a relationship with Oscar Wilde.
THE MARQUESS OF QUEENSBERRY, his father who is sued by Wilde for publicly calling him a sodomite.
SIR EDWARD CLARKE, Wilde’s lawyer.
FRANK HARRIS, writer and friend of Wilde’s.
GEORGE BERNARD SHAW, playwright and friend of Wilde’s.
EDWARD CARSON, lawyer for the Marquess.
QUEEN VICTORIA
MARVIN TAYLOR, present-day scholar and professor.
CHARLES GILL, prosecutor in the second trial.
FRANK LOCKWOOD, Solicitor General and prosecutor in the third trial.
The role of OSCAR WILDE is already cast.
